At least 15 people were killed and 44 others injured in a fire that broke out on Friday in a residential complex in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing.

The fire started at 04:39 in the morning on Friday (local time) and to extinguish it, strong firefighting forces with 25 vehicles were mobilized.

In images seen on Chinese social networks, a multi-storey building can be seen engulfed in flames and thick smoke rising into the sky. The causes of the fire are being investigated, however the authorities estimate that it started in a place where there were electric two-wheelers.

In a press conference he gave, the mayor of the Chinese metropolis, Chen Zhichang, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

Last month, 39 people died in a shop fire in central China’s Jiangxi province.
