Iran has only a few “days” to reach an agreement on its nuclear program or cause a “serious crisis” of (nuclear) proliferation, the head of French diplomacy warned today.
“The further we go, the more Iran accelerates its nuclear process, the less there is interest for the parties to join the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (CIS / 2015 agreement), so we have reached a turning point right now,” he said. Jean-Yves Le Drian before the Senate.
“It is not a matter of weeks, it is a matter of days,” he insisted, adding that an agreement could be “reached”.
The Vienna talks aim to bring Washington back to the 2015 agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, mainly by lifting sanctions against Iran, and ensure that Tehran fully complies with its commitments.
The other signatories of the agreement, the Europeans (France, Germany, Britain), China and Russia, as well as the United States that left in 2018, “found a convergence” in Vienna to reach a conclusion, stressed Jean-Yves Le Drian. .
“We need (now) political decisions on the part of Iran,” said the French foreign minister.
“They have a very clear choice: either they trigger a serious crisis in the coming days, we better miss it, or they accept the agreement that respects the interests of all parties, and especially the interests of Iran,” he added.
The deal offered to ease sanctions on Tehran in exchange for curbing its nuclear program, but the United States unilaterally withdrew from it in 2018 under President Donald Trump.
At the same time, they have reinstated heavy economic sanctions, prompting Iran to begin to back down from its commitments.
