The employees were ordered to return the extra salary paid to them
Workers in the municipality of Zurich (northern Switzerland) were paid double wages in February due to an IT error, with many of them taking the news with good humor despite having to pay back the extra amount.
Around 30,000 employees were paid twice “on Monday morning due to a technical error”, the city of Zurich’s finance department said in a press release, with the extra wages amounting to 175 million Swiss francs (183 million euros).
The bank that manages the payroll for the municipality’s employees has apologized. However, the employees are obliged to return the extra salary paid to them, the press release underlined.
The error came from the software of a Swisscom provider, which is “conducting an investigation” into the incident, the telecommunications company said.
“Many workers treated the incident with humor,” Claudia Naegeli, the city’s communications manager, told AFP today. Some asked to know if this was a “pilot scheme to pay a 14th salary”. Others wrote to the bank, saying: “Thank you. Please do it again,” she cited as examples.
