Russia’s armed forces have been rehearsing the use of tactical nuclear weapons in the early stages of a war with a global superpower, according to leaked military files cited by the Financial Times.

According to the British newspaper, among those war scenarios described in the files is an invasion of Russian soil by China.

As highlighted by an expert assessment of the files, the breadth of criteria outlined for the use of tactical nuclear weapons is lower than Moscow has ever publicly admitted.

The paper specifically cites 29 secret Russian military files compiled between 2008 and 2014 that include the principles of using nuclear weapons.

Apart from an invasion of foreign troops on Russian territory, the use of such weapons could e.g. to cause the destruction of 20% of the strategic submarine ballistic missiles.

The FT notes that Russia’s smaller “tactical” nuclear weapons are designed for limited use against enemies in Europe and Asia, unlike Moscow’s larger “strategic” nuclear weapons intended for a war with the US.
