The cargo ship Rubymar, which was abandoned in the southern Red Sea after a February 18 missile attack by Yemen’s Houthis, sank, Yemen’s internationally recognized government said in a statement on Saturday, Reuters said in a cable.

The Belizean-flagged cargo ship Rubymar remained half-submerged in the Bab al-Madeb Strait after being hit by a missile attack by Houthi rebels, who in recent days had set conditions for its rescue, with the Houthi leader saying he would allow the rescue operation only if humanitarian aid is sent to Gaza. The sinking British ship could be raised in exchange for the delivery of aid vehicles to Gaza, al-Houthi had said on “X” (formerly twitter).

The Rubymar, which was bound for Morocco and loaded with 22,000 tonnes of fertiliser, sank at the stern, causing a 29km long fuel spill.

It is recalled that the sailors on board were evacuated last Monday, with the help of the 2,082-teu container ship Lobivia (built 2001).
