Stoltenberg: We are concerned that Russia is looking for a pretext for invading Ukraine

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday expressed NATO concern that Russia was trying to find a pretext to attack Ukraine in the shadow of tensions in Donbass.

Stoltenberg revealed that NATO has information that Russia is trying to organize a provocation, and reiterated that NATO states are still concerned, as they have not yet seen signs of withdrawal of Russian troops encircling the Ukrainian border.

“We are concerned that Russia is trying to create a pretext for an attack on Ukraine. There is still no clarity, no certainty, about Russian intentions. We do not know what will happenHe clarified, but added:

Germany has seen no sign of Russia withdrawing its troops from its border with Ukraine, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said on Thursday, warning of sanctions.

A spokesman for the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peshkov, denied reports of Russian plans to invade Ukraine, but said Moscow was closely monitoring the situation in the rebel-held Donbas region. The Russian official commented that Russia has begun withdrawing some of its troops that have completed exercises in areas near Ukraine, but “The process will take some time.”
