Frankfurt this year became the first city in Germany to decorate its streets for Ramadan (March 10 – April 9), following a request from the Greens, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the State Department for Diversity and Anti-Discrimination.

“With the decoration during Ramadan, the city of Frankfurt sends an important message about Muslim life, expressing its appreciation for the people of the Muslim faith who live in this city,” the Greens’ petition states. The “green” mayor of the city, Narkes Eskandari-Greenberg, said for her part that “the lights are lights of unity, against reservations, against discrimination, against anti-Muslim racism and against anti-Semitism.” 100,000-150,000 Muslims live in the city, and they make up about 15% of the total population.

According to information from BILD, the model for the decision was London, which decorated for the first time for Ramadan in 2023. In Frankfurt, Ramadan lights will be installed throughout the city’s pedestrianized area and their cost will vary between 50,000 and 100,000 euros.
