At least 8,565 migrants died on migration routes around the world last year, making 2023 the deadliest year on record for migrants, the UN migration agency said today.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the number of migrant deaths recorded last year exceeded the number of dead and missing worldwide recorded in the previous record year in 2016, when 8,084 people died.

The death toll last year was also 20% higher than in 2022.

“These alarming numbers collected by the Missing Migrants Project are also a reminder that we need to recommit ourselves to greater action that can ensure safe migration for all, so that ten years from now, people don’t have to risk their lives in search of a better life,” said IOM Deputy Director General of Operations Ugochi Daniels.

The Missing Migrants Project, an IOM initiative that has been recording migrant deaths and disappearances since 2014, found that the Mediterranean crossing remains the deadliest route for migrants as at least 3,129 deaths and disappearances were recorded last year.
