A powerful storm is sweeping almost half of the United States (central and eastern states), with meteorologists warning of heavy snowfall, lightning and even tornadoes in some areas.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued storm warnings for strong winds across much of western Oklahoma to northern Maine.

Snowfall was forecast in areas from Oklahoma to Michigan and further northeast, with lightning storms threatening Mississippi and Tennessee as far as Ohio, according to meteorologists.

About 200 flights were canceled at Chicago International Airport and another 270 at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. A total of about 1,000 flights were canceled in the US today, according to Flightaware.com
Hailstorms and isolated tornadoes may occur in Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas. Rains are expected in these areas, in places strong, capable of causing floods.
Southerly winds of up to 80 km / h could cause power grid and transportation problems from the southern United States to the Ohio Valley. The winds can exceed 100 km / h locally in the southern regions of New England, warn American meteorologists.
