New York judge orders Donald Trump to testify before prosecutor

by

A New York judge has ruled that former US President Donald Trump and two of his adult children must answer the attorney general’s questions as part of an investigation into the family’s company.

Judge Arthur Engoron ruled in favor of Attorney General Leticia James, who called for summonses to be issued for the former US president and his children, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, to testify.

Engoron explained that James had a “clear right” to interrogate Trump after revealing “plenty of evidence of possible financial fraud.” According to the court ruling, Trump must be questioned within 21 days.

Alan Futterfas, a lawyer for Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, declined to comment on the judge’s decision. The former US president’s lawyers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The verdict came after a two-hour hearing in which Alina Hampa, Donald Trump’s lawyer, accused James of “selective prosecution and prosecution wrongdoing the country has never seen before,” citing reports that reflect – “Malignant contempt” of the Democratic prosecutor for the former Republican president of the United States. “If he was not who he is, he would not do that,” Hampa said. “This court can stop this circus,” he added.

Last month, James said her nearly three-year investigation into the Trump Organization had uncovered significant evidence of possible fraud. Among other things, he said he could inflate real estate values to secure bank loans and reduce them to pay lower taxes.

The figures also relate to a criminal investigation now led by Manhattan Prosecutor Alvin Bragg, in which the Trump Organization and its longtime chief financial officer pleaded not guilty last July to tax fraud charges. Leticia James participated in this survey in May.

Donald Trump, who has not announced whether he will run for president of the United States in 2024, has called James’s investigation a political “witch hunt” and is trying to stop it by filing a lawsuit.

It is worth noting that Donald Trump’s chartered accountant company abandoned its client for a number of years, stressing that the announcements about the financial condition of his group, which he had been preparing for him for over a decade, can no longer be considered credible. as revealed by lawsuits that saw the light of day on Monday.
