Wright has for years claimed to be the “inventor” of cryptocurrency as he said he was the author of the academic paper published in 2008 that was the cornerstone for the creation of bitcoin
Australian computer programmer Craig Wright, who claimed to be the father of bitcoin, is not the creator of the digital currency, a judge at London’s High Court ruled today.
Wright has claimed for years to be the “inventor” of cryptocurrency. It said that he was the author of the academic paper published in 2008 that was the cornerstone for the creation of bitcoin. That “white paper” was signed “Satoshi Nakamoto”.
“I have concluded that there is overwhelming evidence” based on which “Dr. Wright is not the person who created the bitcoin system” nor “the author of the original bitcoin software code,” Judge James Mellor said, explaining that he would present the full reasoning of his decision at a later date. He did not specify when that would happen.
Wright had appealed against Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), an association calling for the abolition of patents in the field of cryptocurrencies, which accused him of falsifying data to prove his claims. COPA was asking the court to rule that Wright is not Satoshi and therefore stop suing cryptocurrency miners. COPA members are also “heavy names” in the sector, such as the trading platform Coinbase and the company Block specializing in digital payments.
The judge accepted that the 53-year-old businessman is not its author “white paper”nor the person who appeared under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto during the period 2008-11, the mysterious inventor known as the “father of bitcoin”.
During the trial, which lasted about a month and a half, COPA attorney Jonathan Hugh said that “Dr. Wright has failed to produce a single verifiable and credible document» which would support his claims.
COPA now plans to ask UK prosecutors to consider prosecuting Wright for perjury and obstruction of justice.
This decision may also determine the course of another case with plaintiffs on the one hand Wright and on the other 26 developers – individuals and companies, such as the Coinbase platform – whom the businessman accused of infringing his intellectual rights.
