Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia is preparing a new offensive against Ukraine, which will start from the end of May or in the summer
EU foreign policy chief Giuseppe Borrell warned on Thursday that the war in Ukraine could be decided in the coming months, urging Western allies to rush to boost aid to Kiev during a visit to Washington.
“The coming months will be decisive,” he insisted, stressing that “many analysts expect a Russian attack in the summer and Ukraine cannot wait for the outcome of the upcoming American elections.”
“Everything that needs to be done must be done quickly,” he said in the American capital, where he went after his intervention at the UN Security Council in New York.
In Washington, Giuseppe Borrell met with US foreign policy chief Anthony Blinken and weighed in on the implications of a potential Russian victory.
If Russian President Vladimir Putin “wins this war, conquers Ukraine, sets up a puppet regime in Kiev, as we see in Belarus (…) he will not stop there,” he warned.
“All of this will have huge consequences for the US and the alliance systems built around the US and Europe,” he insisted.
The EU High Representative also met with Don Bacon, a Republican lawmaker, a European official said.
She urged him to imagine “Russian tanks in Kiev” and take his message to an alt-right caucus in West Virginia.
Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration has been demanding since last year that Congress approve a $60 billion funding package to continue providing military aid to Ukraine, but the issue remains deadlocked in Congress. Passage of the funding package depends on the goodwill of Donald Trump’s supporters in the House of Representatives, who are refusing to even discuss the text of it amid backlash over immigration.
“This is not a game without consequences. In a few months, Ukraine may not be able to defend itself,”
