The adviser to the Ukrainian presidency Mykhailo Podoliak emphasized today that the idea of Russian President Vladimir Putin for the creation a “neutral zone” within Ukrainian territory is a clear indication that Moscow plans to escalate the war.
Putin left open the possibility of a buffer zone in his re-election speech on Sunday, and the Kremlin argued that “this is the only way to protect Russia from Ukrainian aggression.”
“This is (…) a clear, obvious statement that the war will escalate” Mihailo Podoliak reported to the Reuters agency. “All this is clear evidence that the Russian Federation is not ready to enter into modern, social and political relations, taking into account the sovereign rights of other countries,” he added.
Ukraine has said it is using its own weapons to strike targets inside Russian territory. Some of its allies, such as the US, provide it with weaponry on the condition that it is not used inside Russia. Kiev stepped up its attacks last week in refineries in Russia while paramilitary groups launch attacks from Ukrainian territory in western Russia.
