“Erdogan’s unacceptable statements once again prove the self-evident: anachronistic guarantees do not fit in a modern, European state” says Erdogan
He called them reprehensible, unacceptable and provocative the representative of the Cypriot government, Konstantinos Letympiotis yesterday’s statements of the Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan for Cyprus. For 50 years, Cyprus, a full member of the EU, has been under illegal occupation after the barbaric invasion of ’74, he noted.
“The inadmissibility of what was said and the timing chosen by President Erdogan demonstrate the lack of respect for international law, the European acquis, for the resolutions of the UN General Assembly, but also for the General Secretary himself, whose personal envoy was before a few 24 hours in our country, with the mission of creating the conditions for the resumption of talks within the agreed framework”. The Turkish President, Mr. Letymiotis said after the Cabinet meeting, chooses to send a message of division in practice by violating and ignoring the resolutions of the UN Security Council.
“Erdogan’s unacceptable statements once again prove the obvious: anachronistic guarantees do not fit in a modern, European state. No state is meant to be a pawn of the appetites and expansionist moods of foreign states. This is required by international law. This is what justice and logic demand». As the Republic of Cyprus, he added, “we will continue to devote all our energies to the effort to restart the negotiations from the point where they have been interrupted with the aim of definitively solving the Cyprus problem, on the basis of the Bizonal Bicommunal Federation with political equality, fully aligned and consistent with the resolutions of the SA of UN. This is our historic responsibility and this is our highest national priority.”
Asked if, after the statements of the Turkish President, he believes that there is room for success in Ms. Holgin’s effort, the representative said that the effort of the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, opens “a new period for us in our efforts to restart negotiations”. Her appointment, he said, demonstrates the commitment of the Secretary General to efforts to restart negotiations. “We will not allow anyone to disorient us from this mission of solving the Cyprus problem, within the agreed framework». The Cyprus issue will not be resolved through public statements, he added, we are not going to accept such statements from Turkey.
What we desire and the call we once again address, he continued, is that there be a sincere intention and willingness to return to the negotiations within the agreed framework, from the point where they have been interrupted, in order to reach a sustainable, definitive solution that will benefit for the whole of Cyprus, E/K and T/K, but also for the entire region.
In the meantime, according to KYPE information, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General is going to visit Brussels and Berlin in April, as Germany is considered a country with good relations with Turkey.
