A Turkish soldier was killed and four others were wounded in clashes with members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, Turkey’s Defense Ministry announced Tuesday.

In the same announcement it is also stated that six members of the PKK were “neutralized”. Turkish authorities use the term “neutralization” to indicate that “terrorists” were killed or captured during an operation.

Subsequently, the Ministry of Defense announced that the Turkish armed forces launched airstrikes against PKK positions in northern Iraq, destroying 27 targets. The airstrikes took place in the districts of Metina, Zap, Hakurk, Gara and Qandil, according to the same source.

The PKK – designated a “terrorist organization” by Turkey, the United States and the European Union – has been waging an armed struggle against the Turkish state for three decades, which has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

Last week a high-ranking Turkish delegation led by the foreign and defense ministers visited Baghdad for talks with the Iraqi government on the PKK, as Ankara threatens new large-scale military operations in the region to “eliminate” the group by “the summer ».

For decades, the Turkish military has been conducting cross-border operations against Kurdish fighters in sectors of northern Syria and northern Iraq.
