Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) announced today that it has concluded hearings in its investigation into a Reuters news agency report into the Nigerian military’s secret program of thousands of forced abortions as part of a campaign to combat jihadists.

Citing dozens of testimonies, a Reuters report in December 2022 cited at least 10,000 forced abortions, mostly involving girls who had been kidnapped and raped by jihadists in the country’s northeast.

The leadership of the Nigerian army has categorically denied what the publication mentions.

In February the NHRC set up a task force to investigate the case and officials in the capital Abuja and in the northeastern state of Borno testified before it. The hearings concluded today with the testimony of the attorney general of Borno state and Nigerian army officers.

The committee did not say when its decision is expected or if it will be made public. The army has asked the commission to fully exonerate the charges contained in the Reuters report which raised concerns, the NHRC said in a post on Platform X (formerly Twitter).
