Russian air defense shot down two Ukrainian drones in the early hours of the morning in the southwestern Russian region of Saratov, in the airspace of the city of Engels, according to local authorities.

Regional governor Roman Bushargin said via Telegram that based on initial reports, there were no injuries or damage from falling debris in the city of about 200,000 residents, more than 500 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

The Russian armed forces say that have repeatedly repelled Ukrainian UAV attacks in Saratov, where Engels-2 Air Force Base is located. Strategic bombers that take part in bombings on Ukrainian territory often take off from this latter.

It is unclear if any of the UAVs hit the target. In general, the Russian side tends to announce only the successes of its air defense.

Ukrainian drone attacks were also repelled in the airspace of Russia’s Varonez, Kursk and Belgorod regions overnight, authorities said.

On the other side, Ukraine denounces incessant Russian bombing in Sumi, from where residents have been hastily removed lately. In his nightly speech, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that “since the beginning of this month, the Russian air force has dropped almost 200 bombs” on communities in the region.

Hundreds of residents have recently been evacuated from Soumi.

But also in Russia, Belgorod regional governor Vychislav Gladkov reported that a total of 9,000 people, including 1,200 childrenwill be transferred to other regions of Russia.

The two sides frequently accuse each other of targeting civilians in the more than two-year-old war.

The mass use of drones has completely changed the nature of warfare, both on the front lines and in the rear, a trend closely watched by military analysts. Both parties develop and use such weapons to attack the military, energy, transport and other infrastructures of the adversary.
