The Netherlands will provide 350 million euros to buy ammunition for F-16 fighter jets and advanced reconnaissance drones to be sent to Ukraine, Defense Minister Kaisa Olongren announced from Kiev.

In an interview with Reuters at the end of her two-day visit to Ukraine, the Dutch minister said she went to Kiev to show solidarity and announce the new aid package.

At the meeting of Ukraine’s allies in Ramstein, Germany, Olhgren had stated that 150 million euros would be given for the purchase of air-to-surface missiles that can be launched by F-16 fighters, while another 200 million would finance the purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles that perform reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence gathering (ISR) flights.

The Netherlands has pledged to give 2 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine by 2024. A significant part of this money will be given for ammunition and drones. Kiev says it needs them to end its battlefield losses against Russia.

Denmark, the Netherlands and the US are expected to deliver the first F-16s to Ukraine this summer, after completing their pilot training program. Olongren said from Kiev that the Danish fighter will arrive first, followed by the Dutch later in the year.

“I am optimistic that we will start F-16 deliveries this summer… Denmark first and we have a schedule (…) so that in the second half of the year the Dutch F-16s will also be sent,” he said.
