“This is outrageous and makes it appropriate to block life-saving aid during a man-made famine,” said UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini.
The head of his service UN for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said today that Israel has informed the UN that it will no longer authorize UNRWA convoys carrying food to the northern Gaza Strip.
“This is outrageous and makes it appropriate to block life-saving aid during a man-made famine. These restrictions must be lifted,” UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said on social media platform X.
UNRWA, which provides aid and services to Palestinian refugees in Gauze and across the region, has been in crisis since Israel accused a dozen of its personnel of involvement in its attacks Hamas on October 7 against Israel.
These accusations led UNRWA’s largest donor, the United Statesand some others to stop funding, putting the future of this service in doubt.
However, other countries such as Canada, Australia and Sweden have since resumed their funding.
UNRWA and Egypt said last week that Israeli authorities had denied Lazzarini, who was visiting Cairo, entry to Gaza.
“By preventing UNRWA from fulfilling its mandate in Gaza, the clock will tick faster towards famine and many more will die of hunger, dehydration, homelessness,” Lazzarini added.
