The former minister is accused of allegedly obtaining valuables worth about S$19,000 (€13,000) from a businessman who had dealings with the Transport Ministry, which he headed.
Eight more charges were laid today against Singapore’s former transport minister Subramaniam Iswaran, who is at the center of a corruption scandal rocking the Southeast Asian city-state.
According to the supplementary indictment, he allegedly obtained valuables worth about S$19,000 (€13,000) from a businessman who had dealings with the Transport Ministry, which S Iswaran headed, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) said in a statement. )
A total of 35 charges have been brought against Iswaran in a high-profile case that has shocked public opinion in a country where the term “corruption” seems like an unknown word and political scandals are rare.
The last corruption case involving a minister’s name dates back to 1986. Then National Development Minister Te Chiang Wan was investigated for embezzlement. But he died before he could be brought to trial.
S. Iswaran was arrested last July, accused of accepting bribes of S$383,340 (€263,215) from Malaysian property tycoon Ong Beng Seng – who owns the rights to the Singapore Grand Prix, one of the races in the world championship Formula 1 – in order to further his business interests. He denies the charges.
If convicted, Iswaran, 61, faces up to seven years in prison and a fine of up to S$100,000 (€68,000).
