The head of Hamas, Ismail Haniya, said Tuesday from Tehran that the adoption of a first UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip demonstrates Israel’s “unprecedented policy of isolation”.

“Although this resolution was adopted late and there may be some gaps that need to be filled, the resolution shows that the Israeli occupation is experiencing an unprecedented political isolation,” the leader of the Palestinian Islamist movement stressed after the meeting he had with the Iranian minister Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdolakhian.

Haniya and members of the Palestinian delegation met in Tehran with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to a statement from the Iranian side.

The Iranian leader praised the “unique resistance of the Palestinian forces” against the “crimes and atrocities of the Zionist regime, which are carried out with the full support of the West,” the statement said.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to support the Palestinian cause and the oppressed people of Gaza,” Khamenei added during the meeting.

The Hamas chief’s trip to Iran comes a day after the adoption of the first resolution – since the October 7 war broke out in the Gaza Strip – by the UN Security Council, calling for an “immediate” ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gauze. The resolution was approved with 14 votes in favor and one abstention, that of the USA.

This poll demonstrates “that the US is incompetent to impose their will on the international community,” Haniya emphasized to the media after his meeting with Amirabdolakhian.

According to him, the “Zionist entity” “failed to achieve any of its military or strategic objectives” after almost six months of war. Next to Haniya, the Iranian Foreign Minister did not make statements to the media.

A few hours earlier, Tehran had hailed the resolution as “a positive but insufficient step”calling for “effective measures” to “enable the complete and final cessation of Israeli attacks.”

Iran is the sworn enemy of the state of Israel and supports movements fighting against it in the region, including Hamas.

Haniya’s last visit to Tehran was in November, when the Hamas chief met the Iranian supreme leader.

Iran hailed the October 7 Hamas attack as a “success” but denied any direct involvement.

The resolution of the UN Security Council “passed” after the United States abstained from voting. The remaining 14 members of the Council voted in favor of the resolution, which was proposed by the 10 elected members of the body.
