The United States government announced this Saturday (19) the donation of R$ 520 thousand for immediate assistance to families affected by the storm that caused great damage in Petrópolis and led to the death of more than 140 people.

The donation, which takes place through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is intended for the distribution of personal hygiene, cleaning and food safety kits to homeless families. The funds will be administered by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).

The storm that hit Petrópolis on Tuesday afternoon (15) caused flooding, landslides and left a trail of devastation, with houses destroyed and streets covered in mud after the waters subsided. The work of searching for missing persons who would have been buried by the mud remains active.

So far, 146 deaths have been recorded by the Technical and Scientific team of the Civil Police, at the Legal Medical Institute (IML). The Civil Defense totals 781 occurrences, of which 598 are landslides. Social Assistance serves 930 people in 17 support points.

Emergency actions were taken by the federal government to help the city and residents affected by the storm. Initially, R$ 2 million was released, and the government is preparing a provisional measure for the next week in the amount of R$ 500 million for Petrópolis and other cities in the country affected by rains since the end of last year.

On Friday, President Jair Bolsonaro flew over the affected area and stated that the scenario is one of war and devastation.
