Five policemen were killed and two others were wounded in an attack on Tuesday in the Sistan-Baluchistan province of southeastern Iran, according to Iranian television.

The gunmen opened fire on a motorcade accompanying a suspect in the murder of a police officer last March.

The responsibility for the attack was taken by the jihadist organization Jaish al-Adl (s.b. that is “Army of Justice”), which is based in Pakistan.

The previous week, militants of the same organization had launched attacks against Iranian security forces in the cities of Sabahar and Rask. According to state television, 11 members of the security forces and 16 terrorists were killed in the exchange of fire.

Jaish al-Adl was formed in 2012 by Baluch separatists, a minority of about 10 million – the majority of whom are Sunni – who are spread across Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. He says he is fighting for more rights and better living conditions for the Baloch minority in Shiite Iran. It has claimed responsibility for several attacks in recent years against Iranian security forces in Sistan-Baluchistan province.
