Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said today that Israel “must be punished and will be punished” for his attack on the Iranian embassy compound in Syria.

“The evil regime made a mistake and it must be punished and it will be punished,” stressed Khamenei in a speech on the end of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims.

From Jerusalem, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said for his part that if Iran attacks Israel from its territory, then Israel will retaliate inside Iran.

“If Iran attacks from its soil, Israel will respond and attack Iran”Katz said in a post on social media X.

In a major escalation of Israel’s war with regional rivals, Israeli warplanes are believed to have bombed Iran’s consulate in Damascus on April 1, a strike that Iran said killed seven military advisers while saying it would proceed in retaliation.
