The incident took place on March 21 and the specific scene was recorded by a camera worn by a police officer – Investigation into the incredible violence of the police
Scenes of chaos unfolded in Chicago, USA, in a residential area when police opened fire on a 26-year-old driver who was stopped for a check, firing nearly 100 times in about 40 seconds at his vehicle, killing the young man
The incident took place on March 21 and the specific scene was recorded by a camera worn by a police officer.
Officers stopped 26-year-old Dexter Reed for not wearing a seat belt. He is then asked to get out of his vehicle but he refuses. “Roll down the window. Roll down the window,” says the policeman to the driver, and while he initially rolled it down, he then raised it again. “What are you doing;” the officer asks. “Don’t roll up the window. Don’t roll up the window!” he shouts again.
The officer pulls on the driver’s door handle – which appears to be locked – and then pulls out a gun. “Unlock the doors now! Unlock the doors now!” the officer screams.
The driver apparently says, “Okay, I’m trying.”
Seconds later, as the officer retreats from the vehicle, gunfire erupts with officers firing 96 times at the 26-year-old in just 41 seconds.
The excessive use of force against the 26-year-old has raised questions with the 26-year-old’s family calling for a further investigation into what happened leading up to their son’s death. Initially, the victim’s family wonders why police officers in civilian clothes surrounded the 26-year-old’s car, even holding weapons and shooting dozens of times at him.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the 26-year-old was the one who opened fire first with four officers returning fire “even after Reid had exited the vehicle and was on the ground”. At the moment it has not been confirmed if the 26-year-old was the one who opened fire first, however a weapon was found inside the victim’s car.
Authorities are investigating whether the officers’ actions were justified.
