American forces intercepted more than 70 attack droness and at least tyou say ballistic missiles during Iran’s attack on Israel, according to two US officials with knowledge of the situation, according to CNN.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said US forces intercepted “dozens of missiles and UAVs en route to Israel”. He also stressed that “we condemn these attacks by Iran and its actions” and “we call on Iran to immediately stop any further attacks”.

In a statement, he said that were launched from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yemenadding that US forces remain ready to provide support for Israel’s defense.

I spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for the second time today to reiterate ironclad US support for Israel’s defense in light of Iran’s unprecedented attack from Iranian soil. We reviewed the extraordinary defensive measures and strong cooperation undertaken to defeat this Iranian attack against Israel.”

The US Secretary of Defense demanded that Iran proceed with de-escalation, adding that “We do not seek war with Iran, but we will not hesitate to act to protect our forces and support Israel’s defense.”

The ballistic missiles were intercepted by warships in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, one of the officials said.

IDF: More than 300 drones and rockets fired at Israel

Iran launched more than 300 “threats of various types” against Israelincluding ballistic missiles, drones and cruise missiles, the spokesman said IDF Avichay Adraee.

“We have intercepted 99% of threats to Israeli soil. This is a very important strategic achievement,” Adraee said.

In a post on X, the IDF spokesperson gave a breakdown of the number of weapons used to target Israel:

“Of the approximately 170 drones launched by Iran – not a single one of them penetrated the State of Israel, as our Air Force fighter jets and our and our allies’ air defense systems intercepted dozens of them.

Of the more than 30 cruise missiles fired by Iran – none of the missiles penetrated Israeli territory. Our warplanes intercepted 25 missiles outside the country’s borders.

Of the more than 120 ballistic missiles, a very small number penetrated the Israeli border, while the rest were intercepted. This small number fell on an airbase in Nafatim and caused minor damage to infrastructure.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps said it fired ballistic missiles at “specific targets” in Israel as part of what it called “Operation True Promise.”

The US Navy currently has two destroyers in this area, both of which are guided missile destroyers capable of intercepting missile launches and unmanned aerial vehicles.

US warplanes were also part of the response to Iran’s attack on Saturday and shot down drones fired at Israel, another US official told CNN.

According to IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari, Israeli warplanes intercepted more than 10 cruise missiles and dozens of drones outside Israel’s borders. He also confirmed that Iran also launched dozens of surface-to-surface missiles, most of which were intercepted.

The first wave reached Israel at around 2am local time (midnight BST), with sirens blaring across the country and explosions both visible and audible in the sky in many places. Most of the missiles fired by Iran were intercepted outside Israel’s borders, while a limited number fell inside the country’s territory, the IDF spokesman said.

At 3:45 am the IDF announced that Israelis did not need to remain in the shelters. However, the restrictions on gatherings and the cancellation of all educational activities and excursions remain in force.
