Russia’s war against Ukraine has entered a new phase with Russian attacks now targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure en masse with drones and missiles.

According to the BBC, they often include the same Iranian Shahed drones that were launched from Tehran into Israel. President Volodymyr Zelensky said their sound, whether in the skies of the Middle East or in Europe, “must serve as a wake-up call to the free world.”

Officials in Ukraine say they are now few and far between the thermal and hydroelectric plants throughout the country which have not yet been seriously damaged or completely destroyed.

Last week, a big one facility near Kiev was hit. To the northeast, in Ukraine’s second city, Kharkiv, all three major power stations are in ruins. DTEK, a private energy company, revealed it was operating at less than 20 percent capacity after repeated missile attacks.

As Ukraine tries to repair what it can and keep electricity flowing to homes and industry, it is making increasingly urgent calls for outside help. The Russian offensive has not stopped.

As the BBC reports, there are suspicions that Russian agents inside Ukraine are providing information to Moscow: the power stations cover a huge area and damage or repairs are impossible to hide. But Russia already knows where to aim.

The factories date back to the USSR era, there are still Soviet labels on the ruins, and Moscow has the old blueprints of the facilities.
