The Kremlin today called on Iran and Israel to show “restraint” and avoid any further “escalation” after Tehran launched an attack on Israeli soil in response to the strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

“We are extremely concerned about the escalation of tension in the region,” a Kremlin spokesman said Dmitry Peskov. “We ask all countries in the region to show restraint,” he added.

“Further escalation is not in anyone’s interest (…) We maintain that all disputes can be resolved exclusively by political and diplomatic methods,” Peskov underlined.

Iran launched an attack on Israel on the night of Saturday to Sunday in response to the strike attributed to Israel against the compound housing the Iranian embassy and consulate in Damascus on April 1. This blow killed high-ranking members of the Revolutionary Guards.

Russia has avoided publicly criticizing its ally Iran for attacks on Israel.
