The historic old building of the Danish stock exchange, in the center of Copenhagen, was completely destroyed by a large fire.

The 17th-century Børsen building – one of the city’s oldest buildings – went up in flames in the early hours and its iconic spire collapsed as Danes watched the shocking images with bated breath.

Everyone inside the building was able to leave and employees rushed to rescue some of its historic paintings.

Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt said 400 years of Danish cultural heritage had gone up in flames.
