Military helicopter crashed in the west Kenya as a result of which five military personnel were killed, according to a police source.

Three other military personnel aboard the helicopter were injured and have been taken to hospital, the same source added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

According to local media, the Chief of Army Staff, General Francis Omodi Ogola, was on board that helicopter. His health status remains unclear at this time.

The helicopter crashed in Elgeyo-Marakuet province, Kenyan presidential spokesman Hussein Mohamed said, without giving further details on the cause or casualties. President William Ruto has convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council tonight at the presidential palace in Nairobi.

Government spokesman Isaac Muaura said in a post that a statement on the accident would be issued soon.

At least ten military personnel were killed in June 2021 when their helicopter crashed on landing near Nairobi.
