Macron calls for “targeted European sanctions” on Moscow’s decision

THE Emanuel Macron today condemned Vladimir Putin’s decision to recognize the independence of pro-Russian breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine and called for “targeted European sanctions” against Moscow, according to a statement issued by the Elysee.

The French president called for an “extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council” denouncing “a unilateral violation of Russia’s international commitments and an insult to Ukraine’s sovereignty,” the French presidency said in a statement.

The European Union (EU) will impose “proportionate” sanctions on Russian legal entities and individuals following Vladimir Putin’s announcements on eastern Ukraineinterjected the French presidency.

“The list is being prepared, we will focus on a number of activities in Donbass (s.s. in eastern Ukraine) that are directly related to Russian interests and we will adapt to current developments,” Paris said in a statement. Brussels will take effect today.
