The protesters remained, having set up tents, outside the university premises since Wednesday morning
At least 100 protesters were removed in handcuffs on Thursday afternoon when NYPD officers, wearing specially equipped uniforms, carried out an operation on the campus after the decision of the president of Columbia University to evacuate and break up the anti-Israel protest that was ongoing.
After the arrests, other protesters attempted to block all of the NYPD buses transporting those arrested from the area.
Dozens of police in body armor and masks rushed to the Morningside Heights campus shortly after 1 p.m. and surrounded him by protesters who had set up tents at the site since Wednesday morning.
More than 100 students reportedly ignored requests to leave the campus, even after the administration warned them to vacate by 9 p.m. on Wednesday or they will face any criminal consequences.
Initially, police officers entered the university premises and warned the protesters that they would be arrested if they did not leave.
The protestors ignored their exhortation and thus proceeded to make mass arrests.
As the NYP describes, the protesting students sat quietly in rows and did not resist arrest.
Spectators condemned the scene and shouted at the authorities to back down without making arrests, chanting “shame, shame, shame!” and demanding “let them go!”
Before entering the university premises, police had blocked off 114th and 115th streets south of their main entrance.
