In addition to the four Patriot systems already ordered by Olaf Soltz since March
Germany is reportedly considering the purchase of four additional 1.2 billion euro ($1.3 billion) Patriot missile defense systems, in addition to the four already ordered by Olaf Scholz since March, the Bloomberg.
The plans are said to be at an early stage, with German government officials considering how to finance it, as the total value of the order will reach 2.6 billion euros, according to sources close to the talks.
A defense ministry spokesman in Berlin declined to comment on specific plans, but referred generally to the government’s efforts to better equip its armed forces.
Chancellor Soltz on Thursday called on European Union leaders to send Ukraine more Patriot systems — which are made by U.S. company RTX Corp. — as Russia escalates missile and drone attacks on energy infrastructure and urban centers. His ruling coalition announced last weekend that it would send a third of its Patriots to Kiev, along with other air defense systems.
The Lower House Budget Committee in Berlin approved in March the procurement of the initial four Patriots, with the first system expected to be delivered by the end of next year.
This approval followed a decision taken in December to purchase 500 guided missiles and their spare parts, totaling approximately 3 billion euros.
