The rainfall was so intense that satellites could still be seen from space days later – Landsat 9 captured the scale of the devastation
The unprecedented torrential rains that hit the United Arab Emirates resulted in entire areas being submerged under water in Dubai and other areas.
The rainfall was so intense that satellites can still see it from space days after the clouds have cleared and the last raindrops have fallen.
Dubai – the country’s most populous city – recorded a year’s worth of rain in just 12 hours as areas further east recorded nearly 2 years old in less than 24 hours.
The heaviest rainfall occurred in areas north and east of the country’s capital, Abu Dhabi.
Less than two days after the rain subsided, the Landsat 9 satellite passed over the United Arab Emirates on Friday, April 19 and captured images of heavy flooding. The satellite collects detailed images of the Earth’s surface and is operated by NASA and the United States Geological Survey. In the satellite photos below, the bright blue of the remaining flood waters contrasts sharply with the typically dry soil of the area, which appears brown or light brown.

The satellite also recorded significant flooding in Abu Dhabi. Small, shallow bodies of water are shown in light blue. The largest and deepest areas of water that remain flooded are in dark blue.
Although these images may not capture the extent of flooding in the country in detail, we can still understand from the satellite images what the heavy rains left behind.
