EU foreign ministers agreed in principle to extend sanctions against Iran
European Union sanctions, announced after Iran’s attack on Israel, are ‘sad’ because country acted in self-defence, says Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdolakhian in a post on social media X.
Iran has fired more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel in what it says is retaliation for an alleged Israeli bombing of its embassy compound in Damascus.
yesterday, monday, EU foreign ministers they agreed in principle to extend sanctions against Iran agreeing to extend restrictive measures on Tehran’s exports of drones or missiles to militant groups close to Iran and to Russia.
“It is sad to see the EU quickly decide to apply more illegal restrictions against Iran just because Iran has exercised its right to self-defense in the face of Israel’s risky aggression,” Amirabdolakhian wrote in X, before calling on the EU to sanctions Israel instead of Iran.
Reuters notes that more work will be needed in Brussels to approve the legal framework before the sanctions extension can take effect.
