A 16-year-old boy was arrested for the attack
Warsaw authorities arrested a teenager on Wednesday for an incendiary attack on a historic synagogue in the Polish capital, police said, in an incident that drew condemnation from Polish political leaders.
“Police officers… in cooperation with the Internal Security Service (ABW), arrested a 16-year-old Polish national in connection with the incident that took place last night on the premises of the synagogue,” the police announced in a post on the social networking platform X .
Jewish community officials said security camera footage appeared to show that three molotov cocktails were fired within seconds, although it was unclear whether one or more attackers were involved.
“We were made aware overnight of an incident involving a container containing a flammable liquid being thrown on synagogue premises,” a police spokesman said earlier on Wednesday.
Attacks on Jews and Jewish targets have increased worldwide since the Gaza war broke out last October following the attack on Israel by Hamas-led militants and the subsequent Israeli military offensive.
The Warsaw incident left soot marks around a ground floor window of the synagogue as well as a burnt area on the grass below.
