A night of heavy and very heavy rain accompanied by lots of lightning was yesterday in the south of England, causing a number of problems.

Among other things, lightning damaged the roof of a care home in Elmer, West Sussex and caused damage to a university residence in Chester, while there have been power outages affecting homes, businesses and the rail network, where delays have been reported.

No civilian injuries have been reported and the weather warning for lightning ended in the morning.

The intense storm and lightning lasted for several hours and occurred between the two hottest days of the year so far.

On Wednesday the mercury climbed to 22.1 degrees Celsius in southern England and on Thursday the temperature is forecast to rise to 24 degrees.

This heat, however, may lead to more lightning in the late afternoon.

For the next three days, unsettled weather is forecast in most of the country with rain, but with the temperature not dropping significantly.
