“An Israeli attack on Rafah would cause casualties ‘beyond the acceptable’ limit,” the US Secretary of State pointed out
Hamas is the ‘only obstacle between the people of Gaza and a ceasefire’, says Blinken – Israeli attack on Rafah would cause casualties ‘beyond acceptable’ limit, warns
The Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas remains ‘the only obstacle between the people of Gaza and a ceasefire’ with Israel, said American Foreign Secretary Anthony Blinken.
“We are waiting to see if, in fact, they can take ‘yes’ as an answer to the ceasefire and the release of the hostages,” Blinken said late last night (local time) in McCain Institute’s Sedona Forum in Arizona. “The reality, right now, is that the only obstacle between the people of Gaza and a ceasefire is Hamas,” he added.
Blinken also warned that an Israeli attack on Rafah, the city in the southern Gaza Strip that is home to more than a million Palestinians displaced by the war, would cause “beyond acceptable” damage.
According to the US secretary of state, Israel has not presented any plan to protect civilians in this possible attack. “In the absence of such a plan, we cannot support a large-scale military operation in Rafah because it would cause damage beyond what is acceptable,” Blinken said.
