And while in Australia the women’s mobilizations against gender violence continue, the deputy minister of health complained that she herself was a victim of sexual assault
A very serious complaint is being investigated by the police in Australia according to which Queensland MP Brittany Lauga and Deputy Health Minister, she was sexually assaulted, having previously been drugged.
The deputy health minister said she was attacked on a night out in her constituency of Yeppoon.
“What could happen to anyone happens to many of us,” the politician said.
The incident sparked new protests by women against violence.
Lauga, 37, went to the police station and then to the hospital on April 28.
“Tests at the hospital confirmed the presence of drugs in my body, which I was not taking,” she said in a statement posted on social media, adding that the substance had affected her “significantly”.

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) confirmed officers were investigating a complaint of sexual assault in relation to an incident in Yeppoon on Sunday.
Ms Lauga allegedly contacted other women who said they had been drugged against their will on the same night.
“We should be able to enjoy socializing in our city without the risk of drugs or assault,” said the 37-year-old politician, adding that she needs time to “heal physically and emotionally.”
Police said there have been no additional reports in the same area, but are asking anyone with information or who has experienced something similar to contact them.
“The QPS take all reports of drugs in drink seriously and investigate reports on a case-by-case basis and often in conjunction with other offenses such as sexual assault,” police say.
Lauga has been in parliament for almost a decade and was first elected to the Keppel seat in 2015.
Queensland Housing Minister Megan Scanlon called the allegations “shocking” and “appalling”.
“Brittany is a colleague, she’s a friend, she’s a young woman in the Queensland Parliament and these are really heart-pounding things to read,” Ms Scanlon said.
“It is unacceptable that women are disproportionately victims of domestic, family and sexual violence. Our government will continue to do everything we can to protect women and end violence.”
In Australia in recent weeks, attacks have increased, and according to the data in 2024 a woman will be killed every 4 days.
In April, Joel Cuachi stabbed six people to death in a Sydney shopping centre.
Five of the victims were women, and New South Wales’ police commissioner told Australia’s ABC News it was “obvious” he was focusing on harming women.
A wave of protests took place in response to the attack, with protesters calling for it to be declared gender violence in a state of emergency and to introduce stricter laws to stop it.
