With confirmation of the deadlock, despite the achievement of some progress in the direction of the resumption of talks, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Queillar, is expected to complete the trip to Cyprus next Tuesday.

During her presence on the island, Holguin Queillar sat in on separate meetings with both President Christodoulidis and Ersin Tatar, from which she does not seem to have been satisfied.

On the one hand he heard the leader of the Turkish Cypriots repeat that he will not sit down to a dialogue unless the sovereign equality of the Turkish Cypriots is first recognized.

On the other hand, he heard the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Christodoulidis, “reiterating his positions”, which, however, do not seem capable of taking the Cypriot state out of the quagmire it has been in for the last few years.

Hope for civil society

The lack of progress from the meetings with the leaders is reflected in the statements of the Secretary-General’s envoy concerning civil society.

“Everyone wants to move forward,” said Ms. Quellard, adding that it is “the responsibility of the leaders to do something. I hope they can listen to the people.”

The personal envoy’s conclusions will be included in the UN Secretary General’s report in July, while the next steps in relation to the Cyprus issue will be decided immediately after.
