At least 14 they are the dead from the collapse of a huge billboard in Mumbai, as officials announced on Tuesday. Dozens are injured.

The billboard, measuring 70 by 50 metersAccording to police, it crashed into houses and a gas station in the city on Monday.

Emergency services said, according to the BBC, that some people were still be trapped under the debrisand a rescue operation is underway.

The government of Maharashtra state, where Mumbai is located, has ordered an investigation into the incident.

Footage on local news channels showed the huge billboard swaying in the wind before it came crashing down on buildings near a busy road in the eastern suburb of Ghatkopar city.

“We have rescued about 80 people safely,” an official told news agency ANI. “There is a red car that has been badly damaged, we suspect there are people trapped inside.”

In a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, Mumbai public authorities said “high winds” caused the collapse, and multiple agencies, including the police, fire and national disaster response teams, were involved in the rescue operation.

Authorities also say the billboard was a multiple of the allowed size and the agency that placed her was unlicensed.
