Leaders of various European countries, as well as the president of the EU, expressed their surprise and intense concern about the attack received by the prime minister of Slovakia.
Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, was put in charge of the attack on Slovakia’s prime minister, Robert Fico.
“I strongly condemn this vile attack on Prime Minister Robert Fitzgerald. Such acts of violence have no place in our society and undermine democracy, our most precious common good. My thoughts are with Prime Minister Fitzo and his family,” wrote Ursula von der Leyen in X.
Slovak President Zuzana Tsaputova has condemned the “barbaric and irresponsible” attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was reportedly shot in the abdomen.
“I’m shocked. I wish Robert Fitzroy much strength at this critical time to recover from this attack,” the country’s outgoing president said in her statement.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the news of Fico’s shooting as “shocking”, wishing the wounded man a speedy recovery. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also said he was “shocked” by the attack on his “friend”, as he called Fitso.
With his post on Platform X, the Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu, also stated that he was “deeply shocked” by the news and stressed that the perpetrators should be held accountable.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he was “shocked” by the attack and stressed that violence has no place in European politics.
“Shocked” by the heinous and violent attack against the prime minister of Slovakia, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel and the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzola, say.
“I am shocked by the news of the attack on the Prime Minister of Slovakia, R. Fico, after the government meeting in Hadlova. Nothing can justify violence or such attacks. My thoughts are with the Prime Minister and his family,” European Council President Charles Michel wrote to X.
For her part, R. Metzola said: “I am shocked by the heinous attack against the Prime Minister of Slovakia, R. Fico in Hadlova. On behalf of the European Parliament, I condemn this violent attack. My thoughts are with him and his family at this difficult time.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in a written statement from the government of Rome, underlines that “in her thoughts she is close to Robert Fizzo, his family and the friendly people of Slovakia.”
“I wish, and on behalf of the Italian government, to express the unequivocal condemnation of every form of violence and every attack on the basic principles of democracy and freedom,” added the Italian prime minister.
