The defense referred to little and bigger lies Cohen had told in the past both to protect Trump and for his own personal gain.
Donald Trump’s trial continued Thursday with his attorney continuing his attack on Michael Cohen, challenging his credibility and forcing him to admit in court that he had lied in the past to protect Trump. In particular, he had lied to a federal judge when Trump was prosecuted for tax evasion and false statements.
Trump’s lawyer, Todd Blanche, played a clip from Cohen’s podcast, specifically a part where he is heard saying “the thought of Trump in Otisville jail makes me giddy with joy.”
At the same time, Trump’s lawyer also got Cohen to admit that he believed he played a big role in the indictment of Trump — and bragged about it.
The defense then referred to little or bigger lies that Cohen had told in the past. For example, when Cohen testified to Congress in 2017 about a deal with Trump over Moscow real estate, Blanch noted that Cohen lied about how many times he spoke to Trump about the deal.
And although Cohen told U.S. District Court Judge William Pauley in 2018 that he had not been induced to plead guilty to charges of tax evasion and making false statements, Blanche said Cohen later said he felt he had been cornered in the angle to do this.
“The reason you lied to a federal judge was because the bets affected you personally?” asked Blanche. “Yes,” Cohen replied, confirming that he lied not only to protect Trump, as Cohen claimed, but also for his own personal gain when it suited him.
The trial continues.
