German Chancellor Olaf Soltz spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today and assured him of Germany’s solidarity, a German government spokesman said on Twitter.
“Germany strongly condemns this ruthless act of Russian President Vladimir Putin,” Solz said.
This is a “terrible day for Ukraine” and a “gloomy” day for the whole of Europe, added the German chancellor, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the G7.

“We have a land war in Europe, something we thought was only in the history books. “This is a clear violation of international law,” German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said in a statement.
“This attack will have serious political and economic consequences for Russia,” he added.
For her part, German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock stressed that the international community will not forget this “day of shame” and noted that Germany will respond in cooperation with its partners.
Burbock added that she had convened a meeting of the German government’s crisis management team at 8:30 a.m. local time, and vowed that there would be a “reaction” to this “violation of the basic rules of international order”.
