Ukraine has fired nine US-made ATACMS missiles at Crimea and at least 60 drones at areas in Russia, while a Ukrainian drone strike forced authorities to shut down an oil refinery in southern Russia, Russian officials said today.

Russian air defenses shot down 9 ATACMS launched against Crimea (a.k.a. Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Russia), as well as 57 drones launched against Russia’s Krasnodar region and 3 drones launched against the region Belgorod also in Russian territory, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced today.

Russian officials also said 6 drones crashed on the grounds of an oil refinery in Slavyansk in the Krasnodar region of southern Russia. Russia’s Interfax news agency reported that the refinery was shut down after the attack. The Russian news agency TASS also reported, citing Russian officials, that no fires were caused at the refinery by the attack.

The Slavyansk refinery is a private plant with a capacity to produce 4 million metric tons of oil per year, about 1 million barrels per day.

At the moment, Kiev has not commented on this information.

Russia has reported an increase in Ukrainian attacks on its soil since Russian forces opened a new front in northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region earlier this month.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow was creating a buffer zone there to protect the country from such attacks, which Russia says risk igniting a wider war between Russia and the West if Ukraine uses western weapons.

Russia announced yesterday, Saturday, that Russian forces captured the village of Staritsia, in the Kharkiv region, and defeated Ukrainian units along the front, including in the Sumy region.

Ukraine: Shot down 37 Russian drones

Odesa governor Oleh Kiper also said in a post on the Telegram messaging app that 20 drones were shot down in the Odesa region.

“An administrative building in the Odessa area was destroyed by the debris that fell. In Odessa, debris fell in a yard in a residential area. Fortunately, there were no injuries,” he explained.
