The exercise aims to ensure units and equipment are ready for “combat use of non-strategic nuclear weapons to respond to and ensure Russia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
Moscow officially announced on Tuesday that it is starting nuclear military exercises.
Russian forces started the first stage of military exercises “which include practical training in the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons” in the Southern Military District, the defense ministry announced.
THE President Vladimir Putin gave the order earlier this month for the drills to take place. The ministry said the first stage of the exercise involved missiles Iskander and Kinzhal (supersonic ballistic missile).
The exercise aims to ensure that units and equipment are ready for “military use non-strategic nuclear weapons to respond and unconditionally ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Russian state in response to provocative statements and threats by individual Westerners officials against the Russian Federation,” the ministry said.
Vladimir Putin and the Russian military have touted the Kinzhal, or Kh-47, as an example of the modernized missile arsenal of Russia, claiming that its supersonic speed makes it extremely difficult to intercept.
The Kh-47 ballistic missile has range of about 2,000 kilometers, so it can be launched away from the battlefield. It travels at about 10 times the speed of sound and comes from the shorter-range Iskander ballistic missile, which is launched from the ground. It carries a head almost 500 kg.
