Starmer assured Labor has a long-term plan to rebuild Britain
July’s general election will give the country a chance to end the “chaos” of Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government, opposition Labor leader Keir Starmer said tonight.
“Whatever is said, whatever is done, this election is about the opportunity for change,” said Starmer speaking to their supporters, since Sunak announced elections for July 4. “A vote for Labor is a vote for stability, economic and political, policies that will not burden the lives of all of us. One vote to stop the chaos. It’s time for a change,” he added.
Starmer assured that Labor has a long-term plan to rebuild Britain, which will bring economic stability, reduce waiting times in health services, secure national borders and reduce energy bills.
According to recent opinion polls, the Labor Party is the heavy favorite in this election, reportedly leading the Conservatives by 20 points on average. A compilation of polls by Politico gives the center-left party 44% in voter intention, compared to just 23% for the Conservatives who have ruled the country for 14 years.
The nationalist Reform UK party founded by Nigel Farage, the Brexiteer, is said to be on 12%, meaning it could deprive the Conservatives of valuable seats.
Another YouGov poll released today shows that 71% of Britons disapprove of Sunak. Only 20% have a positive opinion of the prime minister (the rest did not express an opinion). For Starmer, on the other hand, 34% have a positive opinion and 51% negative. Overall, the Labor party remains more popular, with 42% favorable views compared to 20% for the Conservatives.
The House of Commons has 650 seats. In the last general election, on 12 December 2019, Boris Johnson’s Conservatives took 365 seats, securing a majority, compared to 203 for Labour. In the local elections held at the beginning of May, the Conservative party suffered heavy defeats.
Around 60 Conservative MPs have already announced they will not stand in the July election.
