“Australia has made it very clear that Israel should not proceed with its operation in Rafah,” Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong today called for a “ceasefire now” between Israel and Hamas following a deadly Israeli airstrike on a displaced persons camp near Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
“The events of the past 24 hours highlight that a humanitarian ceasefire is needed now to protect civilians,” Ms Wong said via X.
“Israel’s bombings have had horrific and unacceptable consequences,” the Australian diplomat continued. “Australia has made it very clear that Israel should not proceed with its operation in Rafah, where more than half of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million people have taken refuge,” he recalled.
“Hamas must release all hostages, stop using Palestinian civilians as human shields and surrender their weapons,” he added.
The Health Ministry of Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, said at least 45 people were killed and dozens injured in the shelling and fire at a tent camp on Sunday night. Most of the victims were women and children, according to the same source, which denounced a “massacre” of civilians.
