Collapsed club in Mallorca did not have a rooftop permit, mayor says
The Medusa Beach Club in Palma de Majorca of Spain, which collapsed last week killing four people, did not have a permit to serve tourists on its roof, the city’s mayor said today.
Two German tourists, a Spanish waitress of Senegalese origin and a Senegalese man were killed when the two-storey building housing the beach restaurant collapsed on 23 May.
“The roof didn’t have a license either [το εστιατόριο] permission to occupy the roof,” Mayor Jaime Martinez Yabres told reporters today, revealing the contents of several city council reports on the crash.
Martinez Yabres said that the preliminary investigation concluded that the accident was caused by the excessive weight of a large number of people on the roof, which had been renovated without the required permit from the Municipality.
About 21 people were on the roof when the building collapsed, according to city fire chief Eder Garcia.
Firefighters said the club usually took out tables on the roof, but that night had prepared a larger table for a group of 12 Dutch tourists, which they believe may have caused the building to collapse.
“Nobody should be up there,” Garcia said.
The accident happened as Spain’s Balearic Islands prepare for the summer tourist season expected to bring millions of visitors.
The German women who were killed were 20 and 30 years old, the waitress 23 and the Senegalese man 44 years old.
Martinez Yabres said the reports have been sent to the police and the prosecutor’s office. The city council will also participate in any future lawsuits filed regarding the building’s collapse.
