The initiative of the Greek Prime Minister K. Mitsotakis and the Polish Prime Minister, D. Tuskon the creation of a European anti-aircraft canopy, was discussed today at the EU Foreign Affairs Council held in Brussels, at the level of Defense Ministers.

Asked about this, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, during a press conference, said that the initiative of a common European anti-missile shield is “absolutely logical” to protect the entire European airspace, but it is a technically complex issue.

It makes a lot of sense to have an air defense system that will protect the entire European airspace“, said Z. Borel.

We have an internal market for trade, why not have a common air defense system to defend the entire airspace with a common capability? It certainly makes sense“, he added, noting that it is up to the defense ministers to decide.

Continuing, the High Representative explained that the implementation of such a system poses not only a question of financing, but also issues that are “technically” complex. “The devil is in the details. How will it work, who will command it, where will the missiles of this defense system be located, who will make the decisions…“, said Z. Borel.

He also noted that this matter must first be considered from the perspective of the EU budget, who cannot finance weapons and added that an air defense system should be designed, decided and managed by the military and not by Euro-officials.
